چکیده

We estimate the effect of the experimental uncertainty in the measurement of the temperature of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) on the extraction of cosmological parameters from future CMB surveys. We find that even for an ideal experiment limited only by cosmic variance up to l = 2500 for both the temperature and polarisation measurements, the projected cosmological parameter errors are remarkably robust against the uncertainty of 1 mK in the firas CMB temperature monopole measurement. The maximum degradation in sensitivity is 20%, for the baryon density estimate, relative to the case in which the monopole is known infinitely well. While this degradation is acceptable, we note that reducing the uncertainty in the current temperature measurement by a factor of five will bring it down to the per cent level. We also estimate the effect of the uncertainty in the dipole temperature measurement. Assuming the overall calibration of the data to be dominated by the dipole error of 0.2% from firas, the sensitivity degradation is insignificant and does not exceed 10% in any parameter direction. Gravitational interaction of cosmic microwave background (CMB) photons with matter perturbations present along the line-of-sight to the surface of last scattering modifies the shape of the CMB anisotropy power spectrum. Here I focus on (linear) integrated Sachs-Wolfe and (non-linear) gravitational lensing effects and discuss the detectability of the resulting distortions and their possible cons...

Gravitational lensing of cosmic microwave background anisotropies and cosmological parameter estimation

Gravitational lensing, caused by matter perturbations along the line-of-sight to the last scattering surface, can modify the shape of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy power spectrum. We discuss the detectability of lensing distortions to both the temperature and polarisation anisotropy power spectra and we analyse how lensing might affect the estimation of cosmological parameter...

Weak Gravitational Lensing of the CMB

Weak gravitational lensing has several important effects on the cosmic microwave background (CMB): it changes the CMB power spectra, induces non-Gaussianities, and generates a B-mode polarization signal that is an important source of confusion for the signal from primordial gravitational waves. The lensing signal can also be used to help constrain cosmological parameters and lensing mass distri...

The Cmb Anisotropy Dependence on Cosmological Parameters

I review the general aspects of cosmological parameter estimation from observations of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature anisotropies in the framework of inflationary adiabatic models. The most recent CMB datasets are starting to give good constraints on the relevant parameters of inflationary adiabatic models. They point toward a model consistent with the basic predictions of i...

Bigger uncertainties and the Big

We use Bayesian hierarchical models and recent results from the theory of minimax confidence interval estimation to study the effect of prior information in a cosmological inverse problem. We consider the effect of prior information on uncertainty estimates of a linear functional Lx of an infinite-dimensional model x, given noisy observations y = Kx+x. The model represents the cosmic microwave ...
